More and more evidence is accumulating that vitamin D can dramatically lower the risk of getting cancer.

A recently published study conducted at Creighton University in Nebraska in the United States followed a group of nearly 1200 healthy women over the age of 55 for four years.

The original purpose of the research project was to study the effect that calcium and vitamin D3 supplements would have on women's bone health.

Some of the women were given placebos, some were given calcium supplements, and some were given calcium supplements and 1,100 IU vitamin D3 each day.

The researchers made an astonishing finding.

At the end of four years, those women who had been taking 1,100 IU vitamin D3 had developed 60 % fewer cases of cancer than the women in the other groups.

Now it appears that Vitamin D3 supplementation may offer a simple, cheap, effective, and safe way to lower cancer risk. This study has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In Canada, the Canadian Cancer society has recommended that Canadian adults start taking Vitamin D supplements to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society is recommending that Canadian should take 1,000 IU (international units ) of Vitamin D supplements per day, especially in the fall and winter months.

Vitamin D supplementation is particularly important for people who are older, those who have dark skin, those who don't go outside very much, and those who don't get much sun.

Because this particular study was conducted with post-menopausal white women, it's not known whether the same dramatic results in lowering the incidence of cancer would also apply to men, to younger women, or to people of other ethnic groups.

The Canadian Cancer society does not have a recommendation at this time regarding vitamin D levels that would apply to children.

The study at Creighton University is not the first one to show a reduction in cancer with vitamin D supplementation. Early in 2007, two other studies showed that vitamin D intake was linked to lower rates of colorectal and breast cancers.
